New Tesla Model 3 Performance Announced

 By: patrick_y : April 24th, 2024-03:56
Tesla's new Model 3 Performance model has just been announced.  This replaces the previous Performance model which is quite an impressive car!

Quick Facts:
510 horsepower
296 miles of range (US EPA Testing Standard). This is a 45 mile penalty compared to the normal Long Range AWD version.
0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds
Upgraded brakes.
Adaptive suspension (not air suspension, adaptive valving).
20 inch staggered wheels and tires.  Wheels are a unique design to this model.  Wheels are forged!  Not cast!
Special Front Bumper with air curtains and diffuser - specific to the Performance model.
Special front seats with sporty bolstering!
"Insane" level performance.
Not a "Ludicrous" level performance, that level is reserved for 3-motor models with carbon sleeve rotors (like the Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid)
I was told that there would be a 19" wheel option as well, but doesn't seem to be the case.
Price; $53,000 USD in USA.  Before destination, taxes, registration, and tax credit.

Looks very impressive to me with the on paper stats!  I haven't driven this latest Performance version, but I will say The Tesla Model 3 does handle very well.  It's very heavy, but the mass is low.  The brakes are not very good, the ones on the Performance model are significantly better than the non-performance models though.  It's not the most emotional car to drive, but it's a fantastic cars if you can tune out the road noise, the paint quality isn't very good, and the build quality is below average.  It's also very convenient to plug the car into the electrical mains at home and not have to go to the gas station.  The technology and user interface is pretty darn good (more buttons and stalks would be nice), almost like an iPhone that's a car.

Full disclosure, I am a Tesla stockholder.

Any thoughts?  I think it's a cool car.  I can't wait to try one out.  Although my current car hasn't missed a beat - so I don't feel a need to replace it.

My two cents comment:

I don’t see where this is environmental sustainable and why it should be sponsored by public money.
It is just a sportscar for people that would like to appear environmental friendly.
This car is just the summum of hypocrisis or non sense.

Ahh! Good point!

But even more people would complain if the government picked and chose specific models for eligibility for tax credits right? So it's no easy solution. But I agree... Why should a high performance sedan like this get public money?

How about a subsidy based on hp/torque and not specific brand or models?

 By: S F : April 24th, 2024-15:02
Say subsidy only applies for EVs with up to 150 hp and 200 nm of torque? 😂 That should be sufficient for daily commute right?😂

Someone told me that getting money from the government is "socialism"

 By: Marcus Hanke : May 15th, 2024-08:47
So why should a specific category of goods be subsidized? Well, it's the same with our tax credits and subsidies for EVs, but then, we Europeans are renown for socialism, aren't we? smile
Marcus

Can't argue with that...

And it's just so strange that the government only subsidizes the most expensive and unnecessary "high performance version" and not the normal versions.  It's almost counterintuitive.

Hi praise to call this a "sports car". More of a glorified golf cart to me 🤣

But the part about appearances, I fully agree.

You gotta visit California more often - we all live in these GIGANTIC Golf Cart Communities!

 By: patrick_y : April 25th, 2024-02:19
Joking aside, these are impressive golf carts - they can go really fast.  They just don't seem to carry a lot of golf clubs.  I really don't like the trunk of the Model 3, it feels small.

Dear Friend, I plan to visit CA only 1 more time in my life. For a lunch or dinner with Art at Rainbow B&G.

Aside from that, I plan to never set foot in that state again.
You are welcomed to join us if you like, date TBD.

I don't blame you! Without getting too political - California has become a very strange place!

 By: patrick_y : April 25th, 2024-15:52
Hope to see you sometime! If not, I'll have to come to see you - when the weather isn't freezing and windy blizzard conditions - I am a Californian after all.

I purposely did not expand my comments, any rational person will understand why I find CA despicable.

And don't think I am picking on your naturally a gorgeous state - I feel very much the same about my own state, Colofornia (as we now call it here), which years ago I planned to never ever leave. But I'll be leaving this state as soon as I can.
Maybe we can meet in Vegas? Plenty of good restaurants there. In fact, are we not due for another IGOTT??

Yes! Another IGOTT is definitely overdue!

 By: patrick_y : April 27th, 2024-21:14
I didn't know things had gotten that bad in Colo-fornia!

Doesn't matter where you go Michael, if it's worth moving to..

because of cleanliness, low crime, sensible people, low taxes. Californians will inevitably find you and destroy what made that area good in the first place. No offense to Patrick of coursesmile

LOL! We Californians ruin everywhere!

I hear the Texans want their Texas back.

The Stones are playing two shows here the second week of July, Michael. Just . . .

. . . sayin'.

smile

It looks too common, no personality at all. Then the autonomy on the highway, especially, is ridiculous. Ok, the performances are outstanding, but if you go full gas, the autonomy will be 80 kilometers?

 By: amanico : April 24th, 2024-07:03

The range is definitely less than a petrol or diesel car...

 By: patrick_y : April 25th, 2024-02:27
Let's say you compared this to a BMW M3 or Mercedes AMG C63, it's definitely going to have less range. But, it will be less expensive to run, just as fast if not slightly faster, and you can charge it at home. And lest we forget, if we drive an AMG C63 flat out, the autonomy on a race track is probably not great neither. The biggest problem is obviously long highway driving - especially autobahn driving in Germany. So... Let's say hypothetically we want to drive from Berlin, to Dresden (to see Lange) and back to Berlin, I don't think the car can make it on one charge - around 400 km but much of it at very high and inefficient speeds - which would be an absolute pain!

Not even sure it can do 400 Kilometers on the autobahn. Or you do them at 90 km /h.

 By: amanico : April 25th, 2024-05:18

I know at around 140 kph, the consumption goes to around 4 kilometers per KWH on my Tesla. So assuming this car has around 80 KWH, that's only 320 kilometers.

 By: patrick_y : April 25th, 2024-14:47
My car only has around 60 KWH, so my car can only do around 240 KM at high speed. And Autobahn speeds can be 200 kph, so, the consumption will go up even more, thus shortening the autonomy.

That's it. So no point having such performances if you have an autonomy of 100 kilometers when fully enjoy it...

 By: amanico : April 25th, 2024-15:21

I wonder what my AMG Mercedes would do on the autobahn?

 By: patrick_y : April 25th, 2024-15:55
Probably 30 liters per 100 km? Would that be reasonable for a 5.4 liter gas guzzling engine? It wouldn't last very long at high speeds of 200+ kph, as the tank is only 80 liters! But at least I'd get 200+ kilometers of very high speed driving and if I need to stop for fuel, I can refuel quickly in around 5 minutes or so!

Exactly...

On the autobahn, we find Teslas mainly in the slipstream of trucks ...

 By: Marcus Hanke : May 15th, 2024-08:56
... at less than 90 km/h. The more impressed I was with a guy and his Model S who took part in a "sports" driving training of our national AA. They have a nice course for that not far from my place, some short straight parts, many curves. In the straight parts, the Tesla was unreachable, its acceleartion was out of this world, but in the curves, physics struck back, and my car with some 70% of the Tesla's mass had no difficulties "kissing" the S' rear bumper again. However, nothing can really describe the sex appeal of the AC Cobra with its V8 sound and incredibly attractive a$$ . I glued my Golf R to its rear, just to enjoy that delighting sight and sound.
Marcus

I'd want to be in the AC Cobra's slipstream as well!

On the Austrian Autobahn, the Teslas drive that slowly?  In Germany, I see them going 200 KPH all the time.

At that pace, you will have to refill the battery 150 kilometers later... :))))

 By: amanico : May 15th, 2024-20:49

Yes, at a constant 90 km with a truck in front of me punching the air for me, my little Tesla could go 500+ km!

 By: patrick_y : May 16th, 2024-10:37
But normally, probably only around 340 km. And if I drive fast, like around 130-140 kph (our speed limits are rarely this fast in USA, sometimes in Texas they allow you to drive around 130 kph and people push it to 140 kph), probably only around 300 km is my guess.

You are probably right. But on a german highway, I fear you will spend more time refilling than driving.

 By: amanico : May 16th, 2024-14:59

Exactly!

 By: patrick_y : May 17th, 2024-05:52
It'll definitely seem that way!

Won’t Touch Tesla until they get rid of Musk

 By: ANDLIST : April 24th, 2024-07:58
I’m in the market too.  I just cant put money in that guy’s pocket.

Don't blame you - he is very polarizing.
