WristScan for weekend of Sept 19th & @20th is open; "Romans or Arabics"

 By: Tim Jackson : September 20th, 2019-09:49
Please submit your offerings to be judged fairly and judiciously ;-)  well I actually submit with bias, but then we are NOT in a court of law!

Romans:

Arabics:

I'm excited to see what is shown this week, as a lover of Romans, my heart usually points me in that direction, but I do have a couple in the collection that are rather tasty.

Let's see your tasty treats, and remember two offerings only if possible. I know some of you will find this tricky, however I and the judges will appreciate it ;-)

Cheers,
Tim

Great theme, buddy!

I will start off with a very diplomatic offering

Excellent piece, was thinking a Claifornia dial would show up somewhere...

Cheers,
Tim

I always enjoyed the quirkinesses of this dial

Great pictures 👍
Is there any explanation as to why they made it like this?

I guess there is no explanation for this dial dear Christian...

... except it was designed and patented by Wildsdorf in the early days of Rolex.

They were called Error Proof Radium Dials by Rolex.

The term California is a modern term given by collectors and it is said that its origins is a California based dial restorer who specialized in restoring this type of dials.

They employed this dial on their Bubblebacks and in the first Panerai watches sent to Florence, Italy which as you know were enterely made by Rolex.

In any case I find them fascinating and in the last years have bern adopted by other brands as well. Hagwe my friend! Abel

Thanks Abel, you beat me to the punch! [nt]

Dear Abel, thank you so much

this is very interesting. I thought it was a Panerai invention. The whole Rolex  Bubbleback chapter is something I hardly know anything about but I am sure it has a huge following for a very good reason.
What a wonderful advertisement you posted, btw.

HAGWE, dear Abel. It is soo nice to see you here. I was getting worried, since I couldn’t find you earlier.

Take care, dear friend.

Warmest

... whole World within Rolex. An a very interesting type to specialize in.

Lots of variants references dials make for a challenging collecting type.

This type started me in watch collecting after I received as B day present a book about Rolex history and I discovered Bubblebacks which I had never heard about before.

I got a few interesting examples though my collecting interests soon changed to other frontiers. Lol!

Hagwe! Abel

I 've long wondered why that dial design was given the 'California' moniker . . .

. . . and the explanation you've just given never crossed my mind!

Thanks, Abel - very much appreciated.

This was my first time finding out that these half-roman half-arabic dials existed, very interesting! [nt]
